The long term vision of African LEAF is to give a real home for orphaned and vulnerable children – to provide somewhere beautiful for them to grow and be nurtured – where their talents and experiences can be developed and enhanced.
The Village will be environmentally conscious and self sustaining, producing its own food, including milking cows and goats, laying hens, and vegetable gardens, generating its own power, having its own water through bore and harvesting technologies.
In consultation with local Kenyans it has been identified that the need is to have more focused environmental housing solutions that go beyond the past. It will be built on environmentally sustainable principles with a heightened focus on aspects such as water harvesting.
The environmentally integrated concept will augment and facilitate the social and cultural connections that are part of African traditional life.
Children’s housing will be clustered around safe outdoor play areas, with space and privacy for house mothers. The children will be grouped so that there will be a range of ages together, to mirror a traditional African family.
The Village will be situated on the edge of the Nairobi National Park, on land bought by private African LEAF benefactors.
African LEAF will utilise the water bore on the land, which will supply reserve water for the Children’s Village and may also provide revenue to the Village through the sale of water to the local community.
The Village will support the local community through employment, micro-finance for small businesses creating traditional crafts, workshops and health and hygiene support and education:
The Village will also provide volunteer accommodation to encourage visitors to the project
To achieve the vision of the Environmental Children’s Village, African LEAF plans to:
- • fundraise through a series of projects and activities
- • enlist the support of people with suitable skills (such as builders, plumbers, environmental management specialists) who will assist with the building of the Village as well as training local people
