THE AREA
The New Brighton Farmers' Market is held every Tuesday morning with lots of fresh organic produce, cheese and yogurt, meat, bread, flowers, coffee and pasta.

Round the corner is the New Brighton Store – the Newby - post office, liquor store, newspapers and everything you can't get at the Farmers' Market. And if that doesn't suit your needs, there's a supermarket and an excellent organic butcher at Ocean Shores, a five minute drive from here.

Next door to the Newby is the Yum Yum Tree Cafe. This is a meeting place for locals for coffee or a meal.

Marshall Creek, which runs into the Brunswick River, is over the road from the Newby and very popular with canoeists and kayakers.

The township of Murwillumbah is 25 minutes away. The Murwillumbah Art Gallery always has an interesting exhibition of local work and the cafe is well worth a visit. The Gallery operates a wonderful series of workshops for children during the school holidays. This year they're making funny face and butterfly brooches.

Brunswick Heads is 10 minutes away. Apart from the famous Bruns Hotel (still owned by Strop) which serves a great counter meal and has live music there are many excellent cafes and shops and a Fishermans' Co-op.

There are several music festivals (including the famous Bluesfest) and a Writers' Festival held in the area every year. Many world famous surfers, musicians and film makers live here.

The hinterland towns of Mullumbimby, Bangalow and Uki are within easy driving distance, as is Mount Warning.

This area has always been favoured by artists and craftspeople. There are two Steiner schools nearby and the township of Mullumbimby has 7 primary schools, catering for different religions and lifestyles.

Fifteen minutes from Byron Bay and 30 minutes to the Gold Coast gives you access to cinemas, shopping, art exhibitions and all the alternative therapies you want within easy driving distance. You can get an excellent massage, acupunture, chakra balancing, reiki, have your horoscope done, your palm read, a tarot reading, aromatherapy, reflexology, a crystal bed or your aura photographed. You can scuba dive or snorkel, get a tattoo or a body piercing, sky dive, go for a scenic flight in a light aircraft or helicopter, go to a yoga or pilates class or spend the weekend with a goddess and learn the art of tantric loving.

Or you can relax in your own back garden after a swim and a walk on the beach.
